# 28 >$^{28}$‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.’ These verses really struck me as I read them. It's not the only place in the Bible that tells us about the wisdom in fearing the Lord. If we fear the Lord, we needn't fear anything else, but we frequently do. Fearing things other than God is a dangerous trap that can lead into all kinds of sin. If we fear people we may sin in the way they want us to. If we fear what people will think of us if they knew what we've done we may lie to conceal our wrongdoing (this is certainly a fault in me). If we fear being poor we may acquire wealth by unjust means. But fearing the Lord means that you fear his judgement, he sees everything, hears everything and knows every thought and motive. He is the ultimate arbiter of right and wrong. So fearing the Lord is synonymous with fearing being found by him doing evil, so it is the most powerful motivation to turn from evil and do good.
